Exhibition of paintings and drawings by ERA artist Geoff Hewitt at Pocklington Arts Centre.
Meet the artist: Tuesday 9th September (5pm – 6:45pm), Saturday 13th September (10am – 4pm).
Geoff Hewitt lives in Willerby and is a workshop tutor, demonstrator and commissioned artist. Working predominantly in oils, he exhibits his work widely and has gained several awards for his drawings and paintings.
“I am from the first generation of my family not to have been coal miners or potters, but my much-valued upbringing in that world of hard work, hard play, hardship and gossip shaped my art. I’m drawn to straightforward narrative subjects which depict ordinary people doing ordinary things. The quick expression and the unsaid always attract, especially if they’re ambiguous, far more so than the decorative and comfortable. With no formal training in art, techniques other than the essentials have never been of much interest; I choose to draw and paint what I see and feel. All my work is based on my first love of drawing, and my oil and mixed media paintings often show ghostly remnants of those initial marks.”
