Ali Cargill - Floral Noir Winter

"In my doctoral thesis (in Gothic-nature writing), I define Gothic in terms of freedom and rule-breaking. Now I’m using expressive watercolour to explore these Gothic elements. The Wolds where I live, work and walk, with their shifting moods and landscapes, are a constant inspiration for my paintings. I work with the real and unreal, darkness, the blank of black. But there is also light and free-flowing texture through which I can capture drama and movement, a sense of the beautiful and unruly, the Gothic mystery of nature that I see and feel all around me in these hills."
