'Highly strung wooden people': Spending many hours carefully carving a wooden block into a little living moving person, with a body, head, eyes, hands and shoes etc. puts a soul into a puppet which is forever reflected in its eyes and glances when it stares back from different positions and postures, when eventually it hangs from the workshop wall. Some find this unnerving; but it is this that creates the tremendous bond between the puppet and the maker. Puppet makers can often be very reluctant to be parted from the characters who have sometimes been so troublesome to make and “bring up”.
