"As a very small child I 'knew' I was an artist. Eventually, I realised that artists paint, and as I’d not painted very much up to then, I began in earnest, starting with my Noddy colouring book. I loved Noddy and can remember my pleasure as I tried very hard not to go over the lines. I believe I’ve moved on since then (1948) but still get the same enormous surge of pleasure when I consider a painting finished. Occasionally, I’m unable to achieve a particular effect and have to keep going back to it, sometimes for years."
